What is this? Why is it important? How is connected to MN350's work?

This May, MN350 is joining Break Free: a global wave of resistance to keep coal, oil, and gas in the ground. Through coordinated protests and acts of civil disobedience around the globe, Break Free will target critical points in the global fossil fuel infrastructure and call for a just transition to clean energy.

This fight brings us Whiting, Indiana, part of greater Chicago and home of the Whiting Refinery. Operated by British Petroleum, Whiting Refinery plays a significant role in the devastating practices of tar sands oil extraction and refinement. Enbridge's pipes carry heavy Canadian crude across parts of Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois before its arrival in Whiting where its processing generates significant local environmental justice impacts.

On May 15th, activists from across the Midwest will convene at the Whiting Refinery for a day of legal, permitted protests, as well as acts of nonviolent civil disobedience led by organizers from the region of the refinery. You have the choice to participate in either action, and we welcome all levels of participation — you do not need to risk arrest to go. Those planning to perform civil disobedience with MN350 must participate in non-violent direct action training, conducted in the Whiting area on Saturday night before the action.

If you decide to participate in the civil disobedience action and are arrested, you may miss the return bus trip. In that case, we will arrange to cover the cost of your return travel via commercial bus such as Megabus, Greyhound, or Jefferson Lines (or other means at MN350's discretion) as long as the outbound leg of your trip was on a MN350 bus. We cannot provide estimates for return times in this case, as they are dependent upon both police department action and relevant bus schedules. If you choose to risk arrest, please ensure you have some flexibility in your schedule.

It is very helpful for people to make their bus reservations as early as possible to guarantee your spot. Oftentimes, buses fill up completely and we can't charter extras at the last minute. We will give full refunds for cancellation requests made in writing to karljon@mn350.org by Friday, May 6 at midnight CT. After that point, no refunds will be given.

Additionally, please RSVP at the Break Free Midwest 2016 website.

We hope to see you on the bus!
